Affiliate Link and Sponsored or Suggested Content Policy

Here’s my current affiliate link policy, thinking behind it, and the history, since I don’t really intend to go remove previous affiliate links or add new ones (but if I do I’ll mention that as well).

As of 2018-05-20

Any affiliate links on the blog are not to be considered endorsements of the product, and I am not receiving any compensation to place them. If I link to something, it’s because I want to share it with you. The affiliate link is just because if you like it and end up using it as a result of my linking to it, I might as well get paid. I don’t currently have any “sponsored content”, nor do I have any sort of “review sample” or “hey, I have a thing, you should check it out and talk about it” on the blog, but in the event that I do, I will call these things out specifically, and if I review something it will be my honest review, to the point that if there’s any sort of contract involved I’ll make sure that the contract states that I can post any review I want, even a negative one. If I post “ad copy” I’ll call it out specifically. If I’m getting an extra special affiliate link or promo code or anything that might not otherwise be available, I’ll call that out specifically.

I don’t like advertising. I am a firm believer in word of mouth. I’d much rather hear from a trusted source that they liked something or that I should give it a try than to have someone tell me to use something just because they’re getting paid for it. I’d love to be able to be that trusted source. Affiliate links and such are just a way to skim a bit off of the top, but I hope to keep my opinions unbiased by financial considerations. I believe that “ad supported” business models inevitably turn into “ad driven” business models. So I don’t intend to turn this blog into anything “ad supported” or “affiliate link supported”. The links are there just as a “why not”, and things I talk about are not chosen because of how much money I can make off showing them to you. I definitely welcome anyone calling me out on it if I slip, and this policy may change in the future. I will strive to be as transparent as possible regarding any financial incentives or suggested reviews or whatever. This is getting pretty wordy. Sorry about that. I’m just not sure how to adequately cover the things I want to cover!

TL;DR: I have affiliate links. If I get paid for something, I’ll let you know, but I’ll also try really hard not to. And I won’t shill. If someone asks me or pays me to review something, I’m going to give you my honest opinion, and not the one handed to me as ad copy.
